Is LASIK Surgery Right For You?
Over the last decade or so, LASIK surgery has become very popular with people with refractive errors. This procedure makes it possible for you to see clearly without glasses or contacts if you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism. LASIK is a laser procedure that can gently reshape your cornea. If you are considering LASIK in Wichita, you would first need a consultation with an optometry specialist to determine if LASIK is right for you. Here at Wichita Optometry, our doctors are more than happy to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
To be a good candidate for LASIK surgery, your prescription would need to fit within the parameters set by the FDA. If you are nearsighted, your prescription can be no higher than -11.00. If you are farsighted, your prescription can be no higher than +5.00. Finally, if you have astigmatism, your prescription can be no higher than 5.00.
To be a good candidate for LASIK, your eyes need to have reached maturity, which occurs at the age of 18.
Your Eye Health
Your eyes will need to be healthy for this procedure to be an option. If you suffer from diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy, you wouldn't be a good candidate.
If you have dry eye syndrome, this surgery can make your symptoms worse. Therefore, you wouldn't be a good candidate.
Finally, your vision needs to have been stable for at least a year before you can have LASIK surgery.
Your Overall Health
Your overall health is a factor in determining whether you would be a good candidate. If you have diabetes, you would not be a good candidate. If you have a condition that causes a weakened immune system, you can develop an infection, which would make you a poor candidate. The same is true if you have lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
If you are pregnant or nursing, you would need to wait to have the procedure.
