Top Five Causes of Dry Eye

Dry eyes can be frustrating. The first step to dealing with dry eye is figuring out what's causing your symptoms. At Wichita Optometry, our eye doctors are here to help you treat your dry eye symptoms. Check out these common causes of dry eye.

1) Air Conditioning/ Heating Systems

When air is treated to become hotter or colder, moisture is removed. This lack of humidity in the air can easily cause dry, red eyes. While turning off your heat or AC may be a simple solution, this can result in uncomfortable living conditions. Talking with an eye doctor about how to keep your house at a comfortable temperature and keep your eyes feeling healthy is a good idea.

2) Aging/ Hormonal Changes

For many people, dry eyes are an unfortunate natural part of the aging process. Certain hormonal changes, such as menopause, can also contribute to dry eye symptoms. If a hormonal change is the cause of your dry eyes, our optometrist may refer you to a specialist for treatment.

3) Allergy Medications

While allergy medications can work wonders for itchy eyes, they can also increase dry eye symptoms. Decongestants work to reduce the amount of moisture in the sinuses and nasal passages and can have the unfortunate side effect of drying out the eyes as well.

4) Mechanical Eyelid Issues

Some people have eyelids that do not close properly, resulting in chronic dry eye symptoms. Often, this issue can be fixed with a simple surgical procedure. If you choose not to have surgery, eyelid issues that cause dry eye can often be treated with prescription eye drops.

5) Rheumatoid Arthritis

People with rheumatoid arthritis know that the disease can cause major issues with the body's immune system. It can also affect the body's ability to produce tears. There are some other chronic conditions, such as Sjogren's syndrome, that can stop the body from producing tears as well.
